I have always loved photography but have, in the past, had little time for it. I'm now a "happy retiree" and thoroughly enjoy "playing" with my cameras and photo applications. I'm a "wanna-be" professional photographer, but I'm quite happy being an amateur. I hope you enjoy my photographs. If you have any comments you would like to share, please don't hesitate to click on the "comment" button or email me by clicking on the "Email Me" link above.

Ron Goes to the Oscars - 2002 : Email me

NOTE: THESE PHOTOS ARE DIGITAL SCANS OF 33MM FILM PHOTOS. THEY ARE OUT OF ORDER, AND THERE ARE A VERY FEW DUPLICATES (I EDITED A FEW TO BRIGHTEN THEM UP). MOST HAVE CAPTIONS BASED ON WHAT I CAN REMEMBER 5 YEARS LATER!!! LOL I WILL RE-ARRANGE THE PHOTOS LATER AFTER I GOT THROUGH MY ALBUM OF HARD-COPY PHOTOS (WHICH ARE IN ORDER).

In February 2002, I was lucky enough to be one of approximately 400 people who "won the lottery" for a bleacher seat for the Acadamy Awards to be held in Hollywood in March; the first Oscar even to be held at the new Kodak Theater at the Hollywood/Highland Centre. I also was very lucky to find that my assigned seat was on the front row overlooking the red carpet and right across from most of the major media "happenings". I had to be at the corner of Hollywood Blvd. and Highland at 7:00 am on that Sunday morning. Shortly thereafter, we were escorted in groups of about 10 or so to what amounted to an airport security check which included a body scanner. Once we were behind the security checkpoint, we were not allowed to leave for the entire day. There were portable toilets available for us and a local Mexican restaurant sent food for us (very nice!). The last of the celebrities and interviews were going on literally up to the 5:30 showtime, and we were allowed to exit the area about 6PM. A very long and exciting day! All of these photos were taken with my Minolta Maxxum 35mm SLR.

UPDATE NOTE: These photos are in no particular order. I also plan to re-scan the photos soon using a new scanner software application I've installed. So, some of these photos may be a bit better later......but they're still not bad considering they are 43 years old and have been stored in trays and boxes all that time.

Please note that the camera I used was a 33mm camera from Montgomery Ward (not a name brand; not sure who made it)....and focusing/shutter speed/aperture, etc. was all manual. I hope you enjoy these photos. I certainly enjoy looking back at this trip I took in 1966.

Two of my best friends from high school and I planned this trip for 2 years before we actually went. Dennis, Brian and I were in college at the time, and the book, "Europe on $5 a Day", was quite popular. I flew from San Francisco to Paris (via New York and Madrid) on June 20th, 1966 and met Brian and Dennis at La Bourget Airport for the beginning of a 12 week 'Grand Tour' using a Eurail Pass, nights in pensions and hostels, etc. We covered 12 countries. These photos (slides) were taken with my 35mm camera and are now over 40 years old. I use a Nikon transparency scanner and am still trying to figure out how to get the best quality scans. I plan to add more scans of any photos I find and other scans of related trip "stuff". I also have two or three new photo editing applications, so I may play with those to see if I get any improvement with image quality, etc.

Day 1 - Trip to France (Departure from San Francisco - non-stop to London then on to Paris) : Email me

September 1st is finally here! After booking our Provence "farmhouse' in September 2005, booking our British Airways flight to Paris in December 2005, we are finally upon the day of departure! I know I was having another one of my 'out-of-body" experiences on this day, but managed to get to the airport via BART with my luggage (and me) in tact. The photos in this gallery (Day 1) are just a few to capture the beginning of the trip at San Francisco International Airport.....our 'jumping off" point. See Day 2 photos for a bit of our flight, arrivals in London/Paris....and our arrival at our hotel in Paris on Saturday evening.

Day 2 (techncally) when daylight arrived on our flight to London....it was Satiurday, September 2nd.....London/Paris time. We arrived in Paris very late afternoon, got to our hotel and had dinner before retiring after being 'on the road' from home from about 11pm Paris time on Friday, September 1st (2pm California time) and going to be about 1am Paris time on September 3rd (Sunday).......4pm Saturday, California time. I sort of go back into jet-lag mode just thinking about it.
So, the first two days were basically travel days. Day 3, Sunday, will be more interesting overall since it would be our first full day in Paris with places to go and things to see. See Trip to France Day 3 (The Louvre and other Paris Delights).

Day 8 - Trip to France (Chateauneuf-du-Pape & Avignon) : Email me

Day 8: Today, Friday, September 8th, we are heading over to an area north of Avignon, the Chateauneuf-du-Pape wine region.....one of the most famous and prestigious of all wine regions in the world. None of these places are very far away from our farmhouse in St. Dildier; 30 minutes to an hour, usually....depending of if we get lost or not! After a few hours visiting the village and driving around the countryside, we will head into the city of Avignon, the gateway city to Provence. Avignon is a medieval city with approximately 3 miles of "walls" surrounding the city center. The walls are punctuated by 39 toers and seven gates.....all very pretty and lit by flood lighting at night. "Over the two week period of our stay in Provence, I will develop a "love-hate" relationship with Avignon, as will be explained later. :-) The weather today is wonderful and the scenery magnificient. Day 9: After breakfast at the farmhouse, we headed off on a long driving trip to Aix-en-Provence, about an hour and a half to two hours away on an expressway similar to our "Interstate Highways" in the U.S. After spending a few hours in Aix, we headed out through some of the "backroads" of the Luberon area of Provence, the area where Peter Mayle (author of "A Year in Provence" and other books set in Provence) lives. It's still surprising how close many of the places we wanted to see in Provence are! The scenery changes with every highway and almost every curve in the road. It's beautiful everywhere. Today, we will see more of some of the "hilltop" villages in the area, including one that was a filming location for another one of my favorite movies.

We decided to just sleep in and get a mid-day train to Avignon and then head back to the farmhouse from there. Therefore, there are not as many photos for "Day 13"; a few in Nice the morning of our departure and a few on the TGV back to Avignon. We had to purchase a new rail ticket (the "missed train" ticket was non-refundable, etc.....just like flying) and it would take us back to the "new" TGV station in Avignon while our rental car was parked at the garage of the "old" rail station in Avignon. 2006 Hollywood Çhristmas Parade : My friend, Bob, and I attended the Hollywood Christmas Parade on Sunday, November 26th, 2006. We had purchased grandstand tickets and wound up with a prime location near the television coverage, announcers, etc......right across the street from the Kodak Theater and Grauman's Chinese Theater....and almost under the marquee of the El Capitan Theatre.....one of the old Hollywood cinemas. These photos were taken at dusk and after dark with zillions of spotlights, camera flashes, etc. I took some with a good strong flash and others with no flash at all....so quality varies. Of course, most of the time, things (people and floats) were "moving"....which made it more difficult to get good clear shots. However, I think the results provide a pretty good "show" of the annual parade which attracts a street audience of 500,000 to 1,000,000 people each year. The weather this year was cool...but perfect for a holiday event like this. It actually got me a bit in "the spirit"!!! :-)

Day 14 - Trip to France (Day-Trip to Lyon) : Email me

Today, we had to be up VERY early in order to drive into Avignon to the TGV Gare for a 7:31 AM train to Lyon. The night before, we had lightening, thunder and wind. Everything was rattling and shuddering throughout the night. Janet got up about 4:30 AM, and I got up about 5:00 AM. It was very dark, and we could see lightening still flashing from our farmhouse windows. I was shocked into total "awakeness" as I discovered a scorpion between my feet while "properly seated" in the bathroom!! When we left the farmhouse, it was pouring rain and still dark. I had a most difficult time with that 5-speed automobile when it came to backing out of our farmhouse "driveway", if that's what you want to call it. I could see nothing, and was backing and pulling forward to try to turn around when we apparently backed into something! Janet was sure we had hit the farmhouse. Once we got to Avignon and on the train (yes, we DID make it there in time), we were fine.....but we knew this was going to be a LONG day......and we were beginning to feel a bit "tired" from all of our travels so far.....but to Lyon it was! This "day in Lyon" was very different that our other "days". Lyon is the 3rd largest city in France (after Paris and Marseilles) and known as the gastronomy capital of France; one of the reasons I was particularly interested in visiting Lyon. So, here we go for a full day "photo tour" of what we saw in Lyon....:-)

New York City Trip - July 1, 2009 : July 1, 2009. Today is the day I fly to New York to meet my long-time and very good friend, Bob (from Santa Monica), for a weekend in New York City. it's been 5 years since I spent time there. Bob and I have milestone birthdays this year and didn't get to celebrate in California, so we are going to do it in New York City. We have been working on an 'agenda' for several weeks and worked up an Excel spreadsheet to keep track of what we wanted to do! I will fly into Newark and he is flying into JFK, and we will meet at our hotel in Times Square, the Doubletree Suites. One of the things we plan to do is see the NYC July 4th fireworks display on the Hudson River. So, here we go......another adventure with lots of photo opportunities! This was the first time I've experimented rather extensively with night-time photography. Some of these photos are good; some are fair. Also, I used my small camera for some shots due to where we were or in a situation where I didn't want to use the big camera. Some of those shots are not nearly as good as what I can get with my Nikon D200. So, we're off to New York City!

Our first real destination would be the Guggenheim way up on the Upper East Side. We decided we would walk from the hotel over to Rockefeller Center (not far) and see what was going on around "The Today Show" for a few minutes and then head on over to an appropriate place to catch the subway to the Upper East Side. New York City Trip - July 3, 2009 : After a busy day yesterday, we are ready for another one. So, we decided to make another stop by The Today Show at Rockefeller Center before taking the subway to Soho & Greenwich Village. Today's weather was still wonderful temperature wise but was still a little bit overcast with a slight chance of rain/showers. We are prepared....maps, camera, umbrellas!

New York City Trip - July 4, 2009 : After another big day yesterday, we are up and running this morning. We decided to have breakfast in the hotel's cafe this morning.....the first rather BIG breakfast we had had since being in New York. We thought we had better get fueled up for the day ahead. Since we did not get to the Guggenheim on Thursday because it was closed, we decided to head there first then go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, neither of which I had been to before. We also had to time everything so we could each make our respective theatre matinees at 2:00 pm.......so the race was on. Of course, today is July 4th........so we have the fireworks tonight.......but still have to work our the logistics for all of that! So, here we go......again!

New York City Trip - July 5, 2009 : Sunday morning, July 5th, 2009. This is our last day in New York City before Bob flies back to Los Angeles and i fly back to San Francisco. We've done so much and, yet, there is so much more we would like to do! We got packed, and I arranged for a late checkout at 2:00 PM. Bob's flight departs JFK about 2:00 or so, so he has to get to the airport earlier than I. I will have a couple of hours to myself before I leave for Newark's Liberty Airport via shuttle that the hotel arranged. No more subway to Penn Station, train to Newark then a change to another light rail train into the airport! :-O After we were packed, we headed out once again and headed toward Rockefeller Center to go to the other half of our Top of the Rock experience....this one in the daytime. It's a beautiful day with no humidity; much like yesterday. We lucked out on the weather, I must say. So, here we go for our sightseeing in New York before heading home this afternoon!

A Foggy Summer Day in San Francisco : These are some photos I took in San Francisco on Wednesday, July 29th. My friend, Janet, and I went into San Francisco for the afternoon on a rather breezy, chilly and foggy day.........no uncommon of San Francisco during the summer, though. We stopped by a favorite wine shop near Potrero Hill and then headed to Cliff House for lunch. After lunch, we drove through the Presidio and down to Fort Point for the views and then took in a French film at the Bridge Theatre. Fun day! NOTE: I'm only providing simple captions for these photos. I took these to experiment with my new Nikon D300 camera body and a new Promote GPS device that snaps into the flash shoe, plugs in to the camera and captures GPS data into each photograph. CLICK ON "MAP THIS" (Above), and a Google Map will pop up with little green "Smuggies" indicating the location where the photos were shot. Way cool!!!!!!! NOTE: Taking these photos as a bit of a challenge because of the heavy fog, the brightness/glare at times, the water, etc.

Trip to El Dorado, Placerville, Grass Valley and Nevada City - August 1, 2009 : On August 1st, I got a call from my very good friend, Janet, wondering if I'd be interested in going on a day-trip.......somewhere. I said OK! We have been having some trouble actually thinking of somewhere to go that we haven't been to or haven't been to recently. It was also foggy and chilly on the coast again, so we thought about where we could go 'inland'. I suggested that we drive up toward Placerville on Highway 50 and take Highway 49 north from there.....and, possibly, get to Grass Valley (I hadn't been there in 30 or 35 years) and Nevada City (not sure I was EVER there before). So, I drove to Livermore to pick up Janet and we took off......albeit a bit late in the day (12 PM) for this kind of trip! Oh, well.....we don't have any particular deadlines, so these are a few photos of what we saw on our August 1st road-trip. Also, if you click on MAP THIS (above to the right), you'll see where the photos were taken. ;-)

Pumpkin Festival 2009, Half Moon Bay : My good friend, Janet, and I decided to take a drive across the Bay to the San Mateo coastline and go to the annual Pumpkin Festival in Half Moon Bay. This is something I've done off and on for years.....especially when my mom and dad were living. Many times, we would go to celebrate my mom's birthday which is always near or on the weekend of this annual festival. Fall was my mom's favorite time of year, as well. These are just a few "snapshots" of our day.
