Ronald Phillips  > Travel > *Ron, Dennis & Brian's Trip to Europe - 1966*
Email me

Please note that the camera I used was a 33mm camera from Montgomery Ward (not a name brand; not sure who made it)....and focusing/shutter speed/aperture, etc. was all manual. I hope you enjoy these photos. I certainly enjoy looking back at this trip I took in 1966.

Two of my best friends from high school and I planned this trip for 2 years before we actually went. Dennis, Brian and I were in college at the time, and the book, "Europe on $5 a Day", was quite popular. I flew from San Francisco to Paris (via New York and Madrid) on June 20th, 1966 and met Brian and Dennis at La Bourget Airport for the beginning of a 12 week 'Grand Tour' using a Eurail Pass, nights in pensions and hostels, etc. We covered 12 countries. These photos (slides) were taken with my 35mm camera and are now over 40 years old. I use a Nikon transparency scanner and am still trying to figure out how to get the best quality scans. I plan to add more scans of any photos I find and other scans of related trip "stuff". I also have two or three new photo editing applications, so I may play with those to see if I get any improvement with image quality, etc.

Ron :-)

Ronald Phillips > I've added this photo, taken at San Francisco International Airport on June 20, 1966. For those of you who were around in the 1960s, remember how people "dressed up" when they flew? This is a group of college students, faculty and family members who were from San Jose State College and went to Europe for the summer of 1966. All were going for different reasons.....work, family, travel...and, with a couple of exceptions, none of us saw each other during that 12 week period. We all arrived home from Europe on September 6th, 1966......a bit worn down, clothes not quite so fresh (LOL) but with a lifetime of memories. I'm the guy in the middle of the front row....to the left of the little boy in shorts. I have a black wool suit (and a sunburn) and wearing a black "clip-on" tie (LOL) with the "cut-off" flat bottom. :-)
Ronald Phillips > Rothenburg, Germany. This "scene" was was a setting used in the 1960's movie, "The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm".
Ronald Phillips > The facace of the Amsterdam Train Station, Amsterdam, Holland.
Ronald Phillips > Dennis & Brian on the boat getting ready to leave Ostende, Belgium to cross English Channel to Dover.....on our way to London.
Ronald Phillips > Taken in Florence, Italy.
Ronald Phillips > Berlin at Night. This photos was taken with my camera resting on a stone wall. I had to tripod and my camera wasn't terribly sophisticated.
Ronald Phillips > A bull fight in Toledo, Spain.
Ronald Phillips > Brian, Carol, Carole and Dennis along the autobahn between Vienna and Salzburg, Austria.
Ronald Phillips > This photo was taken out the window of the room we had in a house in Edinburgh, Scotland. It was early one chilly morning. The milk wagon was delivering milk to the neighborhood.
